The President is the Head of the State and has a lot of power.  However, Congress must approve his decision. Congress is  the legislative body in the United States and it is made up of the House of Representatives (Lower House) and the Senate (Upper House). The House of Representatives has 435 members, elected for 2 years; the Senate has 100 members, two from each State, who are elected for 6 years.

THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

images.jpegTHE STATUE OF LIBERTY

In the past the Statue of Liberty  represented a symbol of welcome to all immigrants who arrived by boat on Ellis Island. But now, she is more than a monument. She is a beloved friend and a living symbol of freedom to millions around the world. She stays  on New York Harbour. French people gave the Statue to the population of the United States  in recognition of the friendship established during the American Revolution.

Sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned to design a sculpture to celebrate 100 years  of the American Declaration of Independence. The Statue was a joint effort between America and France: the American people were to build the pedestal, and the French people were responsible for the Statue and its assembly in the United States.

However, the  lack of money was a problem and various forms in raising funds were carried out both in France and in the USA.

A famous French engineer helped Bartholdi in realizing the statue:Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (designer of the Eiffel Tower) who designed the massive iron pylon and secondary skeletal framework.

The Statue was completed in France in July 1884 and arrived (reduced to 350 individual pieces and packed in 214 crates) in New York Harbor in June 1885. The flame in her right hand is a symbol of freedom  and on the tablet (in her left hand) there is the date of America’s Independence Day: JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776).

The seven rays on her crown stand for the seven continents and seven seas of the world. There are twenty-five windows in the crown from where you can see a wonderful panoramic view.

There are 154 steps from the pedestal to the head of the Statue of Liberty.

During the restoration completed in 1986, the new torch was carefully covered with thin sheets of 24k gold.

The exterior copper covering of the Statue of Liberty is 3/32 of an inch thick (less than the thickness of two pennies) and the light green colour (called a patina) is the result of natural weathering of the copper.

On the pedestal there is a bronze plaque where it is written a sonnet by Emma Lazarus “The New Colossus”
