SPECIAL HOMES

ORDINARY PEOPLE IN EXTRAORDINARY HOUSES!

Hi, I’m Kevin. This is my house. It’s very unusual. It’s an old lighthouse and it’s on an island in the English Channel. It’s over 200 years old and it’s very big. The lighthouse has got two parts: the base and the tower. Our house is in the base and it’s got two floors. Downstairs there’s a kitchen, a living room and a dining room and upstairs there are four bedrooms and two bathrooms. There isn’t a garage, because there aren’t any cars on the island!

The tower is 30 metres tall. At the top there is a special room with a big light. It’s my favourite room.

Hi, I’m Amy. This is my flat. It’s an old primary school in a village in the south of England. The roomare old classrooms and they’ve got names on the doors. My bedroom is in class 4B. It’s very big and bright and it’s got four windows. It’s my favourite room! In my room the bed, the wardrobe and the bookcase are new, but I’ve got an old desk and a chair from the school. There are some old photos of the school in the dining room.s

Hello, my name’s Harry. My house is a boat! It’s on

the Grand Union Canal, in Little Venice, in London. Our houseboat isn’t very big but we’ve got everything. In the livingroom, that is my favourite room, there’s a plasma tv, a DVD player and a laptop. The kichen is very small but there is everything: a cooker, a fridge, a microwave and even a small dishwasher. We haven’t got a garden, but we’ve got a table, chairs and flowers outside.

ECO HOUSES

Is this a house in a film? No, it isn’t. It’s a real house in Wales. It isn’t old, it’s a hobbit-house-simon-dale-interiormodern underground house. This house is round. Downstairs, there is a kitchen, a living room and a bathroom. Upstairs there are two bedrooms. There isn’t a lot of furniture in the house but it’s very comfortable. There’s a balcony and it’s got a big garden.

This house is really cool! It’s near the sea in Wales so it’s great for holidays. It’s underground, but there are lots of windows in the centre of the house. Inside there is one big room: the kitchen, the bathroom and the bedrooms are in this big room and they are different colours.  The furniture is modern and the house is very comfortable.

TWO SPECIAL HOMES

The American President lives in the White House in Washington. The White House is very big. There are 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms and three kitchens. The President’s office is called the “Oval Office” because it’s oval. Some rooms have the name of colours: the “Red room”, the “Blue room”, the “Green room” etc. The White House also has tennis courts, a cinema and a bowling lane.

Queen Elizabeth II of England lives in Buckingham Palace in London. Her home has 775 rooms. These include 19 elegant rooms for special occasions, 240 bedrooms,  92 offices and 78 bathrooms. There are 300 clocks in the palace. There is also a post office, a police station, a doctor’s surgery, a helicopter landing area, a cinema and a swimming pool. In July you can go inside Buckingham Palace and see some of the rooms. People say that there is a secret London underground station under Buckingham Palace, so the Queen and her family can escape in an emergency!

I’m _________________ with my cousin, Vicky and her family for two weeks. They _________________ in the capital, St Helier.

Jersey is a great place. It’s a small island, 22 kilometres from France, but it’s a part of the British Isles. The people _________________ English, but lots of the places have French names. This afternoon we’re visiting Mount Orgueil castle! It’s fantastic!

Yesterday evening there was a music festival! My favourite band, ‘the Kooks’, was there. It ____________________ cool!

TEXT 2 Read the e-mail.

Hi!

I can’t believe it! I’m finally here in America with the English Schools’ Basketball Team. Boston is great! We’re staying at Boston Harbour Hotel for two nights. The view from my room is fantastic.

It’s not all fun. Coach Carson is … Coach Carson! He’s very strict.

Yesterday we got up at 7 a.m. and we went running at the park. After breakfast we met the American coaches and we trained all morning. In the afternoon we had our first big match. We played against the Boston All Schools Team. We didn’t play well. But they weren’t very good so we won, 64-62.

In the evening we went to Fenway Park stadium. It’s really old (it opened in 1912) and the Boston Red Sox always play there when they’re playing at home.

Today, before lunch, we took a bus tour of the city centre (or ‘downtown’ as they say here). Then we went to Wendy’s, a cool hamburger restaurant. The burghers were REALLY BIG!

What are you doing? Send me your news!

Tom

Shiv, Newquay, Friday 12th September

Hi!

I’m writing my blog today because it’s rain / raining AGAIN! We arrived last / next weekend here in Cornwall, a small peninsula in the west- south of England. We’re staying in a hotel near the beach. The first three days were great! I got up very early and I go / went surfing.

Dad can’t surf, but he went deep-sea fishing on a boat. Mum doesn’t like / likes the beach, so she sat by the swimming pool at the hotel and read her book.

Yesterday it rained and I don’t / didn’t go surfing.  We went for a trip on the Lappa Valley steam train.

We saw an old silver mine. In 1846, more than 1,200 men, women and children worked there. (They always ate a Cornish pasty for lunch down the mines. It’s a parcel of pastry with some beef and a lot of vegetables.) We going / went  to a baker’s and bought some Cornish pasties for our lunch. I really liked mine!

Tomorrow we’re go / going to a rainforest! Yes, in Cornwall! We’re visiting the Eden Project. It’s a global garden –  the project wants to save the planet!

On Sunday morning we’re left / leaving to go home…
